About the Original:
The entire time I painted this...no, from the moment I finished the eyes, and she could look at me, I would imagine I could hear the cast of Aida singing "Nubia"...a favorite Broadway memory that was a joy to repeatedly relive as I painted and poured. I painted her unadorned, and as the canvas dried I poured out sheets of pigment, manipulating their ebbs and flows, and eventually transferred them, in layers, on to the canvas. Virtually clothing her with swaths of paint. The gele (pronounced gaye-lay) is the final touch to her attire; a complicated, fabric, head-wrap favored by the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria, West Africa...this one in shades of aubergine with accents of lime and gold, gives her a majestic presence worthy of her inspiration.
